Albert Einstein Institution, which works to advance strategic nonviolent action around the world, has some interesting books which might prove helpful for the current situation in Pakistan. Check out “On Strategic Nonviolent Conflict: Thinking about the fundamentals” and “Waging Nonviolent Struggle: 20th Century Practice and 21st Century Potential“.

We’ve seen the success of many nonviolent movements throughout history when people have won their rights against very brutal systems of authority. Basim Usmani and AK Lodhi talk about similar issues in their article here. Why aren’t the students in Pakistan being more active in this struggle? If only ten percent of Lahori students got together, we’d have more than 4000 people protesting – with coverage beamed all over the world. This is how movements begin – they start small. And then people are encouraged by the efforts of others and they get involved. How many ordinary Pakistanis greeted the Chief Justice when he went to Peshawar? A decent number but nothing close to what happened on the journey to Lahore. You start small, create small ripples and with good organisation and clear goals, the struggle ‘tips’ – it’s adopted by the majority.

Dear all,

This blog is a small and humble contribution to the increasing voices of Pakistanis in and outside of our homeland so that we can discuss the on goings in our nation in a civilised and intellectual manner, understand and appreciate our differences and work together to create a truly democratic and free nation.

I feel it is the responsibility of each and every capable Pakistani to raise his or her voice to register a protest against dictatorship, against a media blackout, against torture and abuse of the judiciary, lawyers, the students community and Pakistani civil society at large.

We might must express this desire and longing for freedom and for our fundamental rights. That is the sign of nations that have the energy and desire to create a better society and a better world.
